Anya Taylor-Joy Recalls Being Bullied for Her Looks

Anya Taylor Joy is grateful for the support of her parents.

During a performance on The Drew Barrymore Show this week, The menu actress, 26, told host Drew Barrymore she was bullied for her looks when she was younger. Taylor-Joy credited her parents for giving her advice that helped her avoid any negative interactions she had with her peers.

“I was very, very lucky with my parents, because when I was bullied for my appearance, my mom used to say, ‘You look inside someone, you look inside someone,'” she said. “You don’t look at the class, you don’t look at anything like that. You don’t look at what they do for a job. It’s just, ‘Do you like that person’s heart?’ ”

The The Queen’s Gambit star told Barrymore she “wanted to give my mom a big shout out for that [advice] because it was really helpful.”

During the interview, Barrymore, who is no stranger to twisted movies with roles in movies like screamcomplimented Taylor-Joy’s new thriller The menu as “so unlike any other movie I’ve seen in a long time.”

“Of The menuyou really — I had no idea where it was going,” Taylor-Joy said of the new movie, which follows her character Margot as she and several other guests arrive at a very exclusive island restaurant and meet Ralph Fiennes’ mysterious chefwho creates a mouth-watering – and sinister – lineup of dishes for his diners.


“If you saw that last scene, who on earth could have seen that coming?” Taylor Joy said. “I was so excited by the prospect of being on something original, but also collaborating with these incredible artists.”

Taylor Joy’s The menu Co-star Nicholas Holt called the actress “incredible” at the movie’s premiere in New York City Monday and told PEOPLE he’s been a fan of hers since watching The witch and her Netflix series The queen’s gambit.

“To see the dedication she gives to her characters – she’s always looking for the truth to make the best of every moment for the story, so it was a real pleasure to watch her and be a scene partner with her. are,” Hoult said.

The menu — also featuring Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Judith Light, John LeguizamoReed Birney — is in theaters now.
