Apple Pencil For iPhone Scrapped At 11th Hour, Leak Claims

When Apple unveiled the iPad 10e generation, it contained the original Apple Pencil, the only tablet still using this stylus. But a new rumor suggests the company might have another smart stylus up its sleeve, which would have worked with both the iPhone and iPad, but jettisoned the idea even after a million were made.

According to Nice DuanRuia report on weibo.com claimed that Apple would release a new Apple Pencil in September, alongside the iPhone 14. That would have been the first time a stylus has been mentioned alongside an Apple iPhone, as the current first generation and Apple Pencils of the second generation only work with iPads, although iPhone compatibility has been rumored in the past.

This new stylus was going to be called the Maker according to DuanRui, which might be a typo for Marker, a more likely name I’d say.

This stylus would be a lot cheaper than current Apple Pencil models, with a retail price of $49. At this price point, pressure sensing in current models would be omitted, as would a battery. Instead, it would draw the power needed to operate it from the iPad it was writing on. Some models of the S-Pen, Samsung’s smart stylus, also use this technology.

The leaker goes on to say that the new stylus would also have worked with the iPhone, hence the intention to launch alongside the iPhone 14.

Well, as we know, no such launch has taken place. One of the criticisms of the 10egen iPad is that the connection of the first generation Apple Pencil is inelegant and requires a charging cable and adapter so that the Pencil can be paired with its Lightning connector to the iPad that uses a USB-C connection.

Intriguingly, the source insists something very un-Apple happened: the product had reached production and more than a million were made before the product was cancelled. Those products should now be removed, says the leaker.

How likely is all this?

Well, a new more affordable stylus would fit in very well alongside the new iPad, and the prospect of a pencil for the iPhone was long overdue. The truncated version would be a good fit, as users will probably want to take notes on the screen – something that’s very popular on the Samsung Galaxy phones with the S-Pen – rather than, say, the advanced drawing apps on the iPad.

But I have two major reservations about this rumor.

First, as mentioned above, it’s just not Apple to cancel a product this late in the day. Even the lamented AirPower Charging Station, which reached the announcement stage, was canceled before it entered large-scale production.

Second, it’s the supply chain that can’t keep a secret, so if this product was made I think we would have seen leaked images of it by now.

Unless it looks like the original pencil. It wouldn’t look like the second-generation model, as it doesn’t need a flat bezel for docking or charging.

There was a rumor of a smaller Pencil designed for smaller tablets, so maybe this new report plays into that.

In general, I don’t completely believe this rumor, but I think it sounds nice. A cheaper Pencil with iPhone compatibility is certainly intriguing. Who knows, maybe Apple built these styluses and instead of destroying them, saved them for another time.
