Brazil school shooting: At least 3 dead and 11 injured

At least three people were killed and 11 others injured in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo on Friday after a gunman opened fire on two schools in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo.

The attacks took place in the small town of Aracruz, 80 kilometers north of the capital, Vitoria.

The alleged shooter – who was seen on security footage with a semi-automatic weapon, military clothing and face covering – has been arrested by the police. The suspect has not yet been identified by authorities, but local media, including CNN affiliate CNN Brasil, have reported that the person is a 16-year-old.

Espirito Santo Governor Renato Casagrande confirmed in a Twitter post on Friday that “security teams caught up with the attacker who cowardly attacked two schools in Aracruz. I have declared three days of official mourning as a sign of grief for the irreparable losses. We will continue to investigate the reasons and soon we will have new clarifications.”

The governor said the attacks took place at the Primo Bitti school and the Praia de Coqueiral education center.

Public Security Minister Marcio Celante told media that police believe the suspect acted solely on the basis of security videos, but acknowledged that further investigations were needed to establish more details about the incidents.

Celante also revealed some of what the security video showed.

“The first criminal action was to enter the school by breaking the padlock. He had access to the teacher’s lounge,” Celante said, adding that “he then moved to another school, where he made more victims.”

Brazil’s president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvacalled the incident an “absurd tragedy.”

“It was with sadness that I was informed of the attacks on the Aracruz schools in Espirito Santo. My solidarity goes out to the families of the victims of this absurd tragedy,” Lula tweeted.

Local residents gather outside the police station where the alleged perpetrator of two school shootings in Aracruz is being held.

“My support goes to Governor Casagrande in investigating the matter and comforting the communities around the two affected schools,” he added.

Brazilian minister Victor Godoy also joined his government colleagues in expressing his condolences.

“My condolences to the parents, relatives and staff of Primo Bitti State Elementary and Middle School and Praia de Coqueiral Educational Center, in Aracruz. For the record, I submit my rejection of this act of violence,” Godoy wrote on Twitter.
