The King’s Ransom’ will “honour” Helen McCrory

Ruth Gibson has talked about taking on Polly’s role in the… Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom video game after the death of Helen McCrory.

McCrory, who played the matriarch in the Peaky Blinders TV program, died of cancer in April last year at the age of 52 while filming of the sixth season was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She would also appear in VR game Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom the voice work for Polly, as the game took place between the fourth and fifth seasons of the BBC drama.

Now Ruth Gibson, who was originally only going to do the motion capture for the character, has talked about taking on the role of Polly Gray in The King’s Ransom.

“I’m a big fan of the show. And to be able to kind of step into it like this was very, very exciting,” Gibson said radio times. “I was rewatching episodes of Peaky Blinders just to kind of incorporate myself into Helen’s work, to try to embrace that physicality that she has – and she has such a strong physicality that brought her into the role – when I saw the news that she was so sad was deceased.”

Originally, Gibson wanted to part with the project because “it just felt really uncomfortable for me to literally step into a dead woman’s shoes.”

“We then had a number of conversations with the producers at maze theory about what they wanted to do to honor Helen, and to really create a legacy of the character in Polly that she created, which I thought was a really great way to look at it,” Gibson explained.

She went on to say that she didn’t want to “imitate” McCrory’s rendition. “I really hope that when people play the game they will feel like we’ve found some truth to Polly as a character as a legacy for Helen, but we’re not trying to recreate her in any way.”

Gibson later said Polly was “just a breath of fresh air” Peaky Blinders. “I like the strength she has. I like the strength she has. But, and I think this is absolutely a testament to Helen’s performance, she has a vulnerability and a real softness. She is the heart, for me, in this power.”

According to Gibson, developers Maze Theory “did a really good job of staying true to Helen and Polly as the matriarch,” with the script for The King’s Ransom. “And I think that, especially since it’s VR, that’s going to be one of the experiences for the gamer that I hope they really take away. That they connect with Polly in a way that I don’t think they connect with any other character in the game.”

Earlier this year, Cillian Murphy spoke about the sixth season of Peaky Blinderssaying, “I think the whole series is really a tribute to (McCrory) and to honor her. Her presence and her character’s presence are still felt in the series, and it’s very much a part of Tommy’s journey.” in season.”
