At workfeelings are important.
Not just the way bosses manage employeesand not just in the way employees interact with each other.
Feelings about technology are also important.
You walk into a new job and discover a bright, shiny, state-of-the-art computer on your desk. There’s that extra buzz of excitement when you’re in your little cubicle. Or your small space along a very large table.
This doesn’t seem to be the case for project managers at Amazon.
I’m reviewing this from a Business Insider expose in which former Amazon employees, now working for Google, talk about their past experiences at Jeff Bezos’ happy camp.
There were terrible stories of so-called frupidity. This is the glorious mix of frugality and stupidity that seems to infect too many companies.
However, one of the most penetrating complaints came from a former Amazon product manager. It seems that Amazon did not consider these vital employees worthy MacBooks. Instead, they got “underpowered Windows laptops.”
One can only wonder what specific laptops this could be. The insufficient of one is the ‘works fine for me’ of the other.
But this particular project manager described their pain like this: “I thought it was ridiculous because there’s no joy in it Windows laptops and if there’s no joy, no creativity happens, and if there’s no creativity, what’s a PM worth?”
I’m afraid there may be multiple reactions here.
Among them: “Product managers are supposed to be creative? No way. They just have to get the job done.”
Or maybe, “Joy? Do you expect joy when you’re a product manager?”
Or even, “You expect joy? Do you work for Amazon?”
Or maybe: “You’re not such a raving guy, cult” Apple fansare you?”
But how many of the product manager’s observations could be based on perception and how much on reality?
Microsoft has combated the image of tenacious toughness by creating its own image Surface brand:. You may have many views on these devices, but they are not below par. Creative, they are largely.
Indeed, the Surface brand was ahead of the Microsoft brand by standing for something different – other than the traditional forced business dullness of Windows.
But if a company insists that you only have a cheap windows laptopwhat does that actually say?
The technology a company provides is a signal of respect for the job and the employee. It is also a signal of how the company sees itself, especially if it is a technology company.
You may be wondering what Google offers this product manager now. “Chromebooks‘ I hear you mumble.
No, it looks like employees are getting some good news MacBook with very tasty specifications.
That should explain why there is so much joy at google now.
