Life cycle assessments or LCAs are a decades old process to determine the total emissions of a product. By diving into every single procurement and production step, a detailed emissions map can be created. However, an LCA can take months for a single product, a timeline that is not feasible for large enterprises that need the data quickly to meet sustainability goals.

“We are very happy to launch this project. As part of our Sunshine for All fund, we were looking for a reliable and scalable software solution to calculate the environmental footprint of our products. Our ambition is to understand our priorities to act in our supply chain and to raise awareness among our consumers going forward,” said Barbara Guerpillon, Head of Venture Transformation & Sustainability at Dole Packaged Foods, a subsidiary of Dole Asia Holdings .

DSC has partnered with CarbonCloud, a leading climate information platform for the food industry. The Swedish startup has created software that can automatically calculate product-level climate footprints using machine learning and the world’s most advanced food emissions database. The Swedish company managed to provide 50 climate footprints for DSC in one month, a process that would otherwise have taken several years.

“Our climate footprint is a central performance indicator for our operations and with CarbonCloud we can take this responsibility with confidence. Automating our supply chain mapping and gaining full transparency marks the day when we can stop thinking about how we measure our impact and start working on emissions reductions – product by product,” said Guerpillon.

“This is true innovation in action and we are very pleased to be able to launch this automation functionality with DSC as our customer. DSC reminds the rest of the industry what emissions statistics are for: to work systematically and impactfully on emissions reduction,” said David Bryngelsson, CEO and co-founder of CarbonCloud.

So why are LCAs so complicated?

For example, collecting data is tedious and difficult. A company must know which data to request, from which suppliers it must obtain it and the suppliers must follow up the order throughout the chain. A single processed product can easily contain several hundred emission parameters and then comes the evaluation of different scientific studies for each parameter and the need to know how to compare their quality. In addition, different foods should contain different parameters. Calculating the footprint of a peach is not the same as calculating the footprint of a pineapple. Finally, with data in hand, calculations must follow the same standards and system boundaries.

“If you ask two of the best LCA consultants in the world to analyze the same product, they come up with different numbers. Neither is wrong, but they are still not comparable because the methodology may differ and it is extremely time consuming to figure out which way. Our platform solves that problem,” adds Bryngelsson.

As a climate information platform, CarbonCloud continuously follows scientific evolution to ensure that every calculation is made with the same system boundaries.

“This is our key to making sure you’re comparing apples to apples, figuratively or literally speaking.” Bryngelsson said.

The main driver of the project is DSC’s commitment to the Dead promise and the goal of bringing Sunshine for All. This includes the company’s commitment to a Zero Carbon Action Planincluding targets such as achieving net zero in its operations by 2030 and converting to 100% renewable energy for their operation by 2025.

So far, DSC has calculated the footprint of 73 products through the CarbonCloud platform. The tool not only gives the total carbon footprint of each product, but also provides a detailed overview of emissions from transport, packaging, agriculture and more. The company’s R&D teams also use the platform to develop new products.

“These detailed insights and the ability to incorporate them into early product development is absolutely critical for us to meet our climate goals,” added Guerpillon.

About LCAs
Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a process first introduced in the 1960s to measure the climate impact of packaging. Since then, LCAs have been the go-to tool for GHG emission calculations for foods. The results of LCA are static, manually calculated and the product of tedious scientific work that takes months to complete. A lifecycle assessment can be performed with different system boundaries, depending on what the calculating party decides to include and exclude.
