Elon Musk has promised to offer an “alternative phone” if Apple and Google remove Twitter from their app stores, adding to long-standing rumors of a iPhone rival of Tesla.

Musk’s comment came after being asked about the possible scenario of Twitter being removed from app stores, which could potentially happen if the social media network doesn’t sufficiently moderate content posted on its platform. Twitter has gone through quite a few changes since Musk acquired the company in October, lose hundreds of employees and offer verification via a paid subscription. Questions about the future of Twitter’s moderation have surfaced since Musk has repeatedly expressed his desire to promote free speech, restore suspended accounts and make the platform more open.

While Musk confirmed that he hopes such a clash with Apple and Google will not happen, he recently expressed displeasure with Apple’s App Store fees and, in light of his plans to significantly expand the Twitter Blue subscription service, further conflicts appear likely in the future. Musk’s other companies, such as Tesla, have one tense relationship with Apple, and hesitant to include features such as Apple Music or CarPlay. There were even rumors that Musk demanded to become CEO of Apple talks about possible takeover of Tesla by Apple.

Musk is behind influential companies such as PayPal, SpaceX, Starlink, Tesla, Neuralink, The Boring Company and now Twitter, so the prospect of him starting a project to offer a new consumer smartphone to rival the ‌iPhone‌ seems plausible, especially if its companies’ relations with Apple deteriorate in the future. Tesla making a phone has long been an unproven rumor due to its experience with hardware and software, but it’s now more likely given Musk’s growing tendency to publicly disagree with Apple.
