‘If I Had a Nickel Since That Began’

Of all the classic characters he’s played and all the iconic movies he’s starred in, Luis Guzmán says he’s mostly recognized for a role he never played.

During a recent interview on The Rich Eisen Showthe actor, 66, explained that for decades he has been confused with the late Rick Aviles, who played Willie Lopez in the film Spirit.

“To this day, you and I can walk through an airport, a mall… Today – and someone would say, ‘Why did you kill? Patrick Swayze? What was it like to work with oops [Goldberg]?’ From then on, if I had a penny, I’d probably own this studio, an island, and a few private jets. I swear.”

In the 1990 romantic fantasy film directed by Jerry Zucker, Swayze’s Sam Wheat is killed by Aviles’ Lopez. The ghost of Sam sets out to save his girlfriend, played by Demi Moore. Aviles died in 1995 at the age of 42.

Guzmán, who currently stars in the Netflix series Wednesdaybased on The Addams familytold Eisen that he never had the Spirit role. And for a while he corrected fans who approached him – but after one specific meeting he gave up.

“I was in Detroit one time, changing planes, and a 90-year-old lady came up to me, ‘Oh, my God. I loved you in Spirit.’ I felt so bad and I explained, ‘No, no. That was someone else.’ And then she says, “So what did I see you in?” And I go, ‘Have you ever seen The Count of Monte Cristo?’ And she says, ‘I love that movie. That was such a great movie!’ And I said, ‘Well, I was Jacopo.’ And then she says: ‘No, you weren’t there!’ “

Today, Guzmán said he was happy with the compliments and Swayze chastising him, noting, “From that point on, I said, ‘I’ll always be the man in Spirit.’ “
