King Charles changes an important royal rule, and his timing really is everything. England’s shiny new pen-hating monarch has just submitted a request to parliament to replace his state advisers – aka the royals, who can serve as official stand-ins if he’s ever ‘unwell’.

Quick Background: Under the Regency Act of 1937, the King’s Husband (aka Queen Camilla) and the Four Adults next in line for the throne (aka Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, and Princess Beatrice) can serve as official stand-ins. But if News week notes that getting Prince Harry or Prince Andrew into the role would be a “crisis” for Charles, as Prince Harry lives in the United States (and is no longer a working royal) and Prince Andrew has completely fallen out of favor and his titles have been taken away. So Charles wants to add Princess Anne and Prince Edward to the list, essentially sidelining Prince Harry and Prince Andrew (and maybe Princess Beatriceat).

According to royal reporter Richard Palmer in The express, Charles is probably eager to make the move as soon as possible given Prince William and Kate Middleton’s impending trip to New York City.

“What was very interesting was that the king chose his birthday to write to parliament asking that legislation be brought forward as soon as possible to pass this legislative change,” Palmer said. indicate that this is an important matter that he would like to see resolved. He is well aware that he had to implement this quite quickly, which shows its urgency.

Palmer continued: “Obviously a factor could be William and Kate going to the US at the end of this month. That may have influenced the decision making, because if [the King] suddenly became ill or unwell in some way, William would have to come straight back from the US to interrupt his visit. Or there must be two state councils, as we know, so [William] should have asked someone else to stand in.

Avril sounds levels of complicated, honestly.
