This was first reported in July Anselmo and Brown would unite Wylde and benante for a world tour under the PANTERA banner.
The band will headline a number of other major festivals in North America, South America and Europe as well as host some of their own headline concerts. They will also support METALLICS on a massive North American stadium tour in 2023 and 2024.
According to Billboardthe line-up has been given the go-ahead by the estates of the band’s founding member, drummer Vincent “Vinnie Paul” Abbott and guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbottlike Brownwho said last year Wylde would not tour PANTERA if there was a reunion. It’s unclear what caused him to change his mind.
PANTERA playing two shows this month in Mexico — Hell & Heaven metal fest and Monterrey Metal Fest – followed by performances at three o’clock Knotfest festivals in South America. There is also a one-time show with JUDAS PRIEST in São Paulo, Brazil and a headliner concert in Santiago.
Earlier this week, benante told Metal rim: “The first show with PANTERA gets quite nerve wracking. I probably need a few drinks to be honest with you, to settle in a bit… I need to have that first PANTERA showing below the belt.”
Asked if he was looking forward to a particular performance PANTERA tracks, benante said: “I enjoy every one of them. When I look at the list, I’m like, ‘Oh, I love this song,’ things like that. There are also two odd songs in there that I don’t think they played consistently [their] set. Those are the two songs I like to play the most, I think.”
As for the criticism circulating on social media about the relaunch of the PANTERA name more than two decades since the group played their last show, and all the chatter that it wouldn’t be a real reunion without Vinnie and Dime, benante said, “First of all, it’s not a reunion. It’s a celebration of the music. When you saw the thing go out, it was like ‘PANTERA with…’ the four of us. Those two guys are part of this and who else is there? Vinnie and Dime are not there, so Philip and rexthey were that band too. [They] deserve to be there as good as anyone else. I see the negative stuff sometimes, and I’m like, ‘This is so ridiculous, man.’ Just enjoy hearing those songs again.”
benante told SiriusXMs “Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk” about how he intends to PANTERA gig: “I can’t do this as the drummer of ANTHRAX because it would be a completely different sound. So the way I’m going to do that is if you close your eyes, it will sound like it is Vinnie, In principle. And so it will be. The sound will sound just like him.”
Wylde said he had a similar mindset. “You approach it the same way I play with it Ozzy‘, he said. ‘Of course I have to learn [Randy] Rhodesthey are things and I have to learn Jakes [E. Lee] things, and when I did the [BLACK] SABBATH things, you learn it and do it as faithfully as possible. Charliemust learn everything Vinnie‘s parts. You approach it like you’re in a cover band. When we use the ZAK SABBATH stuff,” referring to his BLACK SABBATH cover band: “I don’t start changing lyrics halfway through ‘war pigs’. You learn the songs – so that’s what you do.
A year ago, Anselmo said he was ready to reunite with Brown for a special tour celebrating the music of PANTERA. The 54-year-old singer, who has been a PANTERA-centric set with his solo band, THE ILLEGALSdiscussed the possibility of re-teaming with his former PANTERA bandmate during an interview with Brazil Inside With Paulo Baron. Asked if he and rex would be open to playing some shows in honor of PANTERAlegacy, Anselmo said, “If rex and I had a show to play, if we were ever on stage together again, I would welcome it with open arms. I love rex. And he would be the same way. We are brothers forever. Standing on stage together, or doing some performances together, is therefore not excluded. It can happen.”
April 2021, rex told Eon music that he and Philip still get offers for one PANTERA tribute tour. “But if you don’t have the other guys in the band, it’s not going to sound the same,” he said. “If we ever did something like that it would have to be perfect, otherwise I wouldn’t do it. It would be a tribute.”
Talk about a possible PANTERA “reunion” intensified when Anselmo participated regularly Wyldes BLACK LABEL SOCIETY to perform PANTERA‘s song “I’m exhausted” during DOWN‘s 2014 stint on the “Revolver Golden Gods Tour”. That buzz only got stronger after that Brown joined the jam on May 23, 2014 as the tour swung through Texas.
Until his death, Vinnie remained on non-speaking terms with Anselmowhom the drummer blamed indirectly dime bag‘s dead.
Vinny Paul and dime bag co-founded PANTERA. When PANTERA broke up in 2003, they formed DAMAGE PLAN. On December 8, 2004, while performing with DAMAGE PLAN at the Alrosa villa in Columbus, Ohio, dime bag was shot and killed on stage by a troubled schizophrenic who believed the members of PANTERA were stealing his mind.
