Watching ‘1899’ on Netflix? You Need to Change This One Setting

1899 — the latest show from the creators of Dark — is now available on Netflix. But some people who watch it might wonder why it feels a bit off from.

My wife brought this up after seeing the show at her mother’s house. After asking a few questions, I realized she had been watching the dubbed instead of the subtitled version.

If you watch 1899, you absolutely can’t watch the dubbing.

Let me explain. To some people, it seems that 1899 defaults to the “English – Dubs” setting in Netflix’s dialogue options.

When watching foreign language programming, some people prefer to watch dubbed over subtitles — normally that’s fine — but with 1899 it’s a little different.

1899 is a mystery show set on a passenger ship en route from Europe to the US, populated with characters from different countries, all speaking different languages. Some characters speak only in English, others speak German or Polish or Spanish or Portuguese. Some characters, such as the ship’s captain, are multilingual. He usually alternates between English to the passengers and German to his crew.

This is where things get weird.

In the dubbing, English-speaking characters have their original actors. Characters speaking other languages are dubbed into English by different actors. That’s strange. It sounds weird, it feels weird. It sucks.

Make sure your settings look like this on Netflix before you watch 1899. Otherwise the show isn’t really right!

Even worse, it makes large parts of the show make no sense.

Without getting into spoiler territory, there are parts of the show where certain characters don’t understand key parts of what’s happening on the ship because it’s being communicated in a different language. For example, an English-speaking character hears the German captain explain something in German, but does not understand it. She later tracks down the captain to have him explain in English. With a dubbing that makes absolutely no sense because everyone on the ship speaks English!

If a show is set exclusively in a place where everyone speaks the same language — for example, Dark, where everyone speaks German — there’s no such confusion with dubbing. But in 1899 there is constant confusion because of the different languages spoken. All of that is lost if you don’t know which characters speak which language.

In short, if you prefer dubs over subs, I’m not judging! But this time I’m afraid this show only makes sense with subtitles.

How to change 1899 in subtitles

It’s pretty simple. Once the show starts, use your remote and click on the little speech bubble at the bottom of the screen. From there I recommend changing to what I show in the image above: Audio should be “English”. [Original]and subtitles must be “English”. [CC]Obviously, there are people who need “English Dubbed” for various reasons (perhaps they are visually impaired), but if you can, I recommend sticking to those options.

Anyway, enjoy the show!
